We want to thank Natural Beds (Joyce) for giving us an opportunity to tell our story as we plan the upcoming celebration of our love and why we see our wedding day as the perfect day to integrate our values and ideals into our ceremony and reception.

This uniting event has been planned while remaining conscious of our exhausted Earth. We have planned our wedding to incorporate local organic food and drinks, non-disposable eating ware (every non-food item used will be kept and reused many times), all wedding party clothing is made from sustainably grown natural fibers, through our website and email-invitations we are paper free, and we will provide recycling for any waste that manages to find its way to the celebration.

Our Story: Being from a very rural area of the Ozarks we have known each other since we were kids and have spent the last 7 years blessed with unconditional love. We now have a beautiful and healthy baby boy, a couple of wonderful dogs, an organic garden, a peaceful home in the Boston Mountains of the Ozarks, and a lifetime of loving partnership ahead of us! In the early stages of our partnership we dreamed of a life together, a life of passion and courage to love and protect what we felt were our most valuable blessings. The ability to love and care for all life, the ability to control our minds in order to manifest only the most positive energy, the freewill to live and dwell within the light, and the most important of all our blessings is our Earth and all that she does to sustain life.

To follow through with our goals we had to be a rock for each other, be strong when the other was weak, bring each other to the light in times of darkness, maintain a healthy body and mind, and thank God often for these valuable blessings. We have spent the majority of our partnership humbled by nature and mesmerized by her beauty. Through camping, rock climbing, hiking, river floating, picking up litter, relaxing at the lake, outdoor music festivals, and simply porch sitting we have put ourselves in an environment that made it easy for us to stay on our chosen path. It is amongst nature that we find ourselves closest to God and empowered to live the life we know to be right and true. We are very happy to share with you that we are accomplishing our goals! We have grown a great deal stronger through our years together and we are still growing stronger every day.

Remember that there is always room to grow and improve. Regardless of where you stand; there is always light and love that needs to be spread, evil that needs to be conquered, and ways to improve your well-being and the well-being of the world around you. After all, we are all connected, we are all one.

The truth is there are not monsters hiding "UNDER" your bed, there are monsters hiding "IN" your bed!

Have you ever wondered who invented polyurethane foam? The same scientist who developed Agent Orange also developed Zyklon B (aka Hydrogen Cyanide) used in WWII to kill 6 million Jews. Shocking isn't it?

This article is written for the occasional person who tells me, "I don't care about the chemicals in my mattress." Are you kidding me? If you knew what I knew, you would change your mind. To understand what's in your mattress, it is best to know the history of your mattress.

Where did polyurethane come from? Who invented it? Why?

The pioneering work on polyurethane polymers was conducted by Otto Bayer and his coworkers in 1937 at the laboratories of I.G. Farben in Leverkusen, Germany. During the planning of the invasion of Czechoslovakia and Poland, IG Farben cooperated closely with Nazi officials and directed which chemical plants should be secured and delivered to IG Farben. In 1941, an investigation exposed a "marriage" cartel between John D. Rockefeller's United States-based Standard OilCo. and I.G. Farben.

IG Farben held the patent for the pesticide Zyklon B^{[citation needed]} (used in Holocaust gas chambers), and owned 42.2 percent (in shares) of Degesch (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Schädlingsbekämpfung) which manufactured it. IG Farben also had managers in Degesch's Managing Committee. Of the 24 directors of IG Farben indicted in the so-called IG Farben Trial (1947–1948) before a U.S. military tribunal at the subsequent Nuremberg Trials, 13 were sentenced to prison terms between one and eight years. Some of those indicted in the trial were subsequently made leaders of the post-war companies that split off from IG Farben, including those who were sentenced at Nuremberg.

The OSS (now known as the CIA) brought these German scientist, who were also convicted war criminals, to America to take us to the Moon with further development of rocket fuel. It was called Operation Paper Clip.

President Truman set limits to the people that were brought over, so false employment and political biographies for the scientists were created. The JIOA also expunged from the public record the scientists' Nazi Party memberships and régime affiliations. Once “bleached” of their Nazism, the US Government granted the scientists security clearance to work in the United States. Later regret because many of these criminals were “menace to the security of the Allied Forces”.

They developed products you used in your home everyday and almost everything requires chemical flame retardants from televisions, computers, furniture, toys, children's pajamas, bedding, carpets and mattresses the list goes on and on.

Other PU pioneers were Union Carbide and Mobay, a U.S. Monsanto/Bayer joint venture. In 1960 more than 45000 metric tons of flexible polyurethane foams were introduced into the market... Polyurethane is not regulated by OSHA for carcinogenicity. Polyurethane polymer is a combustible solid and can be ignited if exposed to an open flame.

This is why mattresses are so highly flammable, they are made from petroleum oil. People don't have a chance to get out of bed because there mattresses are so flammable. Now the chemical companies are making even more money selling chemical flame retardants, they use pesticides such as Antimony (rat poison) as as flame retardant.

Toluene diisocyanate: 2,4-Toluene diisocyanate is primarily used as a chemical intermediate in the production of polyurenthane products. 2,4-Toluene diisocyanate is extremely toxic from acute (short-term) and chronic (long-term) exposures. Acute exposure to high levels of 2,4-toluene diisocyanate in humans, via inhalation, results in severe irritation of the skin and eyes and affects the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and central nervous systems (CNS). Chronic inhalation exposure to 2,4-toluene diisocyanate in humans has resulted in significant decreases in lung function in workers, an asthma-like reaction characterized by wheezing, dyspnea, and bronchial constriction. Animal studies have reported significantly increased incidences of tumors of the pancreas, liver, and mammary glands from exposure to 2,4-toluene diisocyanate via gavage (experimentally placing the chemical in the stomach). The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified 2,4-toluene diisocyanate as a Group 2B, possible human carcinogen.

This is only a partial list of monsters, they all have names. 1/3 of all mattresses are made of chemicals, they are used in the production of polyurethane, solvents that glue layers together and flame retardants to make your mattress not so flammable.

Is Your Furniture Toxic?

Sit down on a foam cushion or lay-down on a foam mattress & you are releasing countless invisible PBDE partials.

Many chemicals used in furniture cushions today have proven negative effects on health. Flame retardants such as PBDE’s (polybrominated diphenyl ethers in use until 2004), boric acid and antimony are highly toxic. Potent insecticides are often sprayed on materials. If you hear that a mattress or cushions have been “treated for dust mites”, that means the materials have been sprayed or were soaked in an insecticide solution.

Other common mattress additives such as formaldehyde, TDI (toluene di-isocyanate), styrene, butadiene, and other petroleum derivatives may have worrisome long-term effects, particularly on the developing brains of children.

PBDE's can create potentially more toxic substances when they burn, including a form of dioxin, a deadly carcinogen.

According to “Respiratory Toxicity of Mattress Emissions in Mice” (Archives of Environmental Health, January 2000), synthetic mattresses emit a variety of toxic chemicals, including styrene, isopropylbenzene, nitrobenzene, 1-methyl-2-ethylbenzene, 1,3-dichlorobenzene and others. The latest concern about chemicals in synthetic mattresses are the fire retardants PBDEs. PBDEs belong to a group of brominated flame retardants. Because PBDEs can account for up 30 percent of the foam’s weight, and they are not bound to the material, much of it can escape from foam mattresses as household dust. The long-term effect of exposure to PBDEs is still unknown.

I am often asked, How do you make a non-toxic sofa cushion? Is it made from natural latex rubber, organic wool and coconut coir? The answer is yes it can be made from all natural fibers and it is not difficult. You just need to know how to do it.

How do you make your own organic latex sofa and chair cushions?

1. Measure your own cushion to determine how wide, deep and tall each cushion needs to be, take into account the curves.

Determine the size of our organic " Tri-fold camping mat" you need. It comes in (2) different widths. 30" wide for $250 and 39" wide for $310. 3.5" high x 80" long.

Each camping mat is divided into 3 sections roughly 26.66" wide. Made from Organic cotton, 1.5" of all natural latex and 2" of coconut coir for a total of 3.5".

You can buy more latex to go on top then wrap with wool batting.

Order what you need from us please allow 3 - 4 weeks for delivery.

Currently you can order the camping mat, the wool wrap, comforter or 2" wool topper which ever you choose to use as the padding or a combination there of.

2. Take the camping mat, cut off the white organic cotton cover exposing the latex and coconut coir mat.

3. Trace as best as you can the shape of the old cushion onto the latex core with a magic marker.

4. Take a electric turkey carving knife and cut around the outline. If you are going to use wool batting you can trim a little more to take into account the wrapping of the wool being careful not to trim to much.

5. Remove the old polyurethane foam from the casing. I would do it outside so you don't breathe the contaminates.

6. Stuff the casing with the new core. If you need to make it deeper consider getting another camping mat or buying a 3" latex layer from us. You can trim it and slice it to fit.

7. If you need more puffy look you can wrap it all in wool batting or cut up a organic comforter, continuing to trim it to make it perfect.

8. I would suggest running a basting thread of strong cotton weaving through the wool batting with a upholstery needle to make sure all the layers don't shift. A alternative for whole cushion couch would be to use a 2" wool topper which also comes in various sizes and can be trimmed.

The easiest way to make seat baking is to buy an organic comforter, wool or silk and cut it up to the desired length sew up the edges. Wrap your latex core like a present and stuff. If you need more for the corners and run out of comforter you can take a shredded rubber pillow and pack the corners. (Do it outside because it will be messy) Make a smaller pillow with what is left over.

9. Stuff it into the casing and zip it up.

10. If you need new cushion covers, I would suggest trying to find a complimentary heavy weight organic cotton or wool fabric a upholster can cut and sew for you. Pendleton has beautiful wool by the yard you can purchase, you will need more if it has a print so the rail road also known as stripes or design will match up.

Word of caution, your old cushion cover may shrink and shred if you try to wash them.

Foot note: We do not sell "outdoor camping mats" as mattresses or furniture cushions because there is no wool or chemical flame retardants in them. But you can make your own and how you use them is your business.

Here is the problem... A couple thinks a $800 bed and 2 King mattresses from the local mattress store is a great buy the local furniture store mattress salesman practically gives the mattress away to sell the $800 bed!

What is wrong with this picture? Shouldn't the mattress be of good quality and last longer than most marriages? I feel it is a complete waste of money here is why....

Is buying a cheap bed from China really great value? Let's say they get 5 years interest free financing, that mattress and bed probably won't last 5 years and you will still be paying on it before you even pay off the bill. Isn't a good nights sleep for the next 3-4 decades more important?

Did you know according to The Better Sleep Council, mattresses have a planned obsolesce of 5 - 7 years? The folds aren't a problem to sleep on either, it's no different than sleeping on the couch with cushions except it's not polyurethane foam. Which every time you sit down you release countless PBDE's into the air.

Made from Organic cotton, all natural latex and coconut coir, needless to say much more durable than anything they could have bought at one of the mattress or furniture stores in town, not customizable but neither is the cheap polyurethane foam mattress. Still it has no coils, no polyurethane foam to break down quickly, no formaldehyde or chemical flame retardants.

You could even make your own queen mattress by putting 4 cot size camping mats together. $250 for each layer (2) on each side is very comfortable. If you only have $250 start with that, get one layer, it's better than nothing at all collect all 4 and you have a Queen size mattress.

The Camping Mats are so versatile you can take it camping because it folds up and can be easily transported, but not on a back pack hiking. You can even make your own organic furniture cushions.

They are even affordable for college students. But we have a strict policy of selling them as "outdoor camping mats" not mattresses because there is no wool or chemical flame retardants in them. But how you use them is your business.

Mattress Guaranteed Returns, Floor Model SCAM?

One of the oldest mattress scams in the book are the "Floor Model" MATTRESS SALE!! Does it really cost less to buy polyurethane foam mattresses?

I see this happen sometimes, if they didn't spend much money on a the bed with mattress, they probably got a used mattress. Retailers call them "floor models" when in fact they may be warranty issued mattresses. A lot depends on where they went to buy it. Local mattress stores often buy refurbished mattresses for the really cheap mattress shopper, from mattress refurbishers. These companies recover mattresses with new ticking and blow the junk out to fluff it up. The junk is dead skin cells, oils and bacteria that breeds all through out the mattress. This is why synthetic mattresses can weigh twice as much in 10 years., and regular mattress stores recommends people replace their mattress every 5 years, besides that the coils and foam wear out and must be replaced for comfort reasons.

Of course you don't have that problem with a Savvy Rest because it is completely transparent with the zipper casing, the all natural latex is naturally anti-microbial, anti-bacterial, dust mite resistant and bed bug can't live in it without having to spray anything on it. It's gross to think about regular mattresses and what's in them. The chemicals, the bacteria no wonder we are a sick society.

These cheap mattresses are no bargain at all, they often come from cities that have high infestations of bed bugs such as Louisville, KY and Brooklyn, NY. Why? Because they buy used mattresses from all over the country and refurbish them there. You see the local mattress truck going around in our local area collecting them and driving around with a truck full of used mattresses. Sometimes they drop them on the interstate getting under peoples cars causing fires.

These collectors pay the mattress store $5. each, then sells them to a refurbisher they refurbish them and sell them back to retailers. Unfortunately the consumer is often unsuspecting. Some states have strict laws regarding this, others don't. We are here in Arkansas and I have yet to see one sanitized mattress let alone with the proper label showing it was "Refurbished."

These refurbishers also get big name brand warranty issued mattresses such as Sealy(tm), Simmons(tm), Serta (tm), Stearns and Foster(tm) etc. Often this is what "Floor model, scratch and dent" means. They are called liquidators they call mattress stores all over the country selling their high profit refurbished mattresses by the truck loads. They can even get them from hotels.

They buy them for $5 each refurbish them, wholesale for $75 - 150 and retails for $600 but the dealer is desperate to sell it to them so they slash the prices down to $300 if you buy right now!!! You get what you think is a "great buy" home and next thing you know you are sleeping in a well. I have even seen regular mattress stores do it with their own mattresses, because they have a "exchange policy or on the internet guaranteed mattress return" and they are forced to sell the used mattress someone else had problems with and slept on as a "floor models" or else no one will buy it.

Companies with return policies: Guess who gets stuck with the exchange? The unsuspecting customer. If someone was that desperate for a mattress and has no money, I suggest they can get a donation mattress at no charge through local churches and non-profit organizations. We donate to them all the time because our customers believe in Free Cycling as we do. People understand what they are getting so there are no attempts to deceive the consumer in the name of profit.

If things are really tight and they feel so compelled to buy a cheap mattress then it is more important than ever to not buy one made from Polyurethane foam. (read the law-label) because bottom line, it doesn't matter if you spend $300 or $3,000 on a regular mattress it's going to break down and sleeping on a broken mattress causes PAIN! Would you clothe your baby in plastic wrap? Set her down to sleep on a metal box? Cover her up with plastic bags? All of which has been sprayed with toxic chemicals to make it safe. No you wouldn't ... but each day mothers unknowingly do just this when they lay baby down in cribs with plastic foam mattress, wearing chemically treated plastic pajamas, and covered in bedding sprayed with chemical flame retardants. This is what happens every night across America when good parents unkowingly expose their children to the TOXIC CRIB.

Why does this happen and what can be done to change this? The simple answer is ... parents are forced by an entire industry and their well paid servants to buy products made with dangerous, unhealthy, and toxic synthetic materials. After all there is BIG MONEY to be made here -- for the chemical industry that is. Another point -- how do they make their plastics "safe"? By adding MORE CHEMICALS!

As consumers it's our duty to learn everything we can about the products we bring into our lives, and one of the areas that pose the most risk is baby's bedding. From the plastic foams and polyester fabrics in crib mattresses, to the chemical flame retardants used to make plastic bedding and jammies "safe". We expose our children everyday to danger. But the good news is today's market place offers mattresses, bedding, and jammies made from all-natural chemical-free and organic materials, that not only are non toxic but safer due to the NATURAL flame-retardant properties of natural materials. Be warned however the "plastic" industry is strong and will misdirect, misinform, and use any means they can to keep you buying their products. For example a major retailer sells an ORGANIC crib mattress that's nothing more than their same old polyurethane mattress covered in an "organic" cotton cover. This is called green washing and the way to fight this is to do your homework -- read the product content labels -- look-up the product on the Internet -- knowledge is power and you have the ultimate say over what is good for your family. By the way ... a good rule of thumb is to be ORGANIC something MUST be 100% ALL natural materials -- wool, cotton, latex rubber can be organic -- polyester or polyethylene can not be organic.

So tonight when you lay baby down think on what she's wearing, laying on, and laying under. Is it wool, cotton, all natural -- or is it PLASTIC, sprayed with something only a chemist can pronounce.

I don't know about you and your baby, but the thought of what's in most cribs gives me nightmares.... I for one dream sweet dreams when my grandchildren sleep on cedar or maple wood cribs, on an organic latex mattress, in untreated pure cotton jammie's.

There is concern that high levels of the fire retardant PBDE, commonly used in mattresses could cause health problems for users. New bedding laws went into effect requiring all bedding be resistant to ignition from open flame. Toxic Fire Retardants (PBDE's) are found in high levels in American Mothers Human Breast Milk. Environmental Working Group (EWG) found unexpectedly high levels of these little-known neurotoxin chemicals in every participant tested. Brominated fire retardants found in mattresses are bio-accumulative, building up in people's bodies over a lifetime.

Brominated fire retardants impair attention, learning, memory, and behavior in lab animals at surprising low levels. The most sensitive time for toxic effects is during periods of brain development and can cause deficits in sensory and motor skills, learning, memory and hearing. These chemicals designed to prevent fires are getting in your children's blood and rewring their brains causing ADD, learning disabilities, hyperactivity, hearing problems, slow mental development and possibly, cancer.

Toluene diisocyanate (TDI) is an aromatic diisocyanate. It is produced for reaction with polyols to form polyurethanes. TDI is one of eleven statutorily listed "Extremely Hazardous Substances" under the New Jersey Toxic Catastrophe Prevention Act whose release "would produce a significant likelihood that persons exposed will suffer acute health effects resulting in death or permanent disability." The number of children diagnosed with Autism and learning disabilities are continuing to rise. Diagnosis for Autism has risen from 1 in 150 to 1 in 91 back in 2002. Many children with autism have high levels of metals in their bodies from environmental sources. Mattresses made from Urethane or synthetic blended rubber have chemical flame retardants in them. Antimony and arsenic are used to treat flame resistance.

I was astonished to find baby stores selling Memory foam mattresses for babies. Memory foam mattress have been tested by the Eco-Institute in Germany. They found such high levels of Arsenic and Phosphorus compounds the German Scientist don't even recommend it. Memory foam is polyurethane with additional chemicals increasing its viscosity and density. Memory foam, like other polyurethane products, can be combustible.

The EPA is powerless to monitor the issues we have with the chemical companies releasing toxic chemicals into our environment. Once the EPA has banned a chemical, the chemical industry re-releases it back into the environment by changing the DNA of that molecule a hair. The problem is so bad it is like shooting fish in the ocean. You will never stop them. There is such poor regulation, very few manufacturers include "flame retardants" on their list of materials.

CBS Boston reports: "The CPSC says five year old children will absorb .5 mg of Antimony (Arsenic) from flameproof mattresses, every night. This is 63 times more Poison than the EPA say is safe! They also say the average adult will absorb .8 mg Antimony every night, and this is 27 times more poison than the EPA says is safe. Antimony is one of the acutely toxic heavy metals (lead, mercury, arsenic, antimony) and is known to cause cancer."

What are your choices? Why is there a ridge in the middle of my mattress?

Most ridges in middle of mattresses occur primarily in king size mattresses. When the two twin extra long box springs are put together to make a king size bed, the wood in the middle actually causes the ridge. Since polyurethane foams compress & no-one probably sleeps in the middle of the mattress all the time, it is impossible to get even wear.

Body Impressions - Why do we get them & where do they come from?

A brand-new conventional mattress may feel like a dream. Almost immediately, polyurethane foam and padding will breakdown and you will start seeing body impressions and over time they get worse. Body impressions are created by the weight of our bodies breaking down the urethane foams (disguised under lots of fancy names, such as super soft, convoluted, memory foam, etc...). Body impressions are permanent and create a uncomfortable hollow feel. Well, the next thing you know you are sleeping in a well, because the mattress looses it's capacity to support your spine with proper alignment.

Unfortunately the mattress you purchased has a planned obsolesce. Those mattress are designed to break down so you have to buy another one 5 -7 years down the road. Unfortunately most people will sleep on a bad mattress for 4 - 5 years before breaking down & purchasing another one. Most people don't want to dish out the money for another mattress thinking the same thing will happen again, you are right that isn't much of a bargain after all.

The truth is, an all natural latex core will not take body impressions. Did I say anything about the padding? That is generally foams, foams will break down. Did you notice I said, "all natural latex?"  I did not say blended. Blended latex will break down because it has synthetic additives that acts like polyurethane. Even memory foam is made from a 55 gallon drum of crude oil, not only is toxic, it also has foams in it that will breakdown and create body impressions. I am telling you about this because leading "S" brands claim their latex mattress is 100% genuine latex, if you read further, you will see it is "synthetic" which feels and acts like polyurethane.

Is there any mattress out there that doesn't create body impressions?
